Caloundra to Sydney by One-Way Truck: Route, Stops and Timing

Caloundra to Sydney is the shortest of the Sunshine Coast routes, and it's still 988 km: about ten hours of driving before you stop for anything. Some people do it in one long day. Most split it, and either way the drop-off is the part to plan around.

How does one-way truck hire from Caloundra to Sydney work?

You collect a car-licence truck or van at Sparkles Car Wash, Caloundra Shopping Centre, 47 Bowman Road, drive to Sydney, and return it at our Castle Hill depot in Sydney's north-west. One flat, GST-inclusive package covers the hire days, the kilometres and damage cover with a $6,500 excess, so you never pay for a trip back.

Which way do you drive?

From Bowman Road, Caloundra Road takes you west to the Bruce Highway (M1). Head south past Brisbane on the Gateway Motorway, which is a toll road, then down the Pacific Motorway past the Gold Coast and over the border into New South Wales. From there the Pacific Highway follows the coast south past Ballina, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie, and the M1 Pacific Motorway takes over near Newcastle for the last stretch into Sydney.

Where should you stop?

Measured from the pickup, Ballina is 278 km in, about three hours, and the right place for a first break. Coffs Harbour, at 476 km, is close to halfway and the usual overnight stop. If you'd rather drive the longer day first, Port Macquarie is 631 km in, which leaves about 360 km for the second morning.

How long does the drive take?

Ten hours is Google Maps' non-stop figure without traffic. A loaded truck is slower up the hills than your car, and you'll stop for fuel, food and a stretch, so the same trip is closer to twelve hours on the road. Leaving at 8:30 AM gets you to Sydney in the evening, well after the last drop-off appointment.

Timing the drop-off

Castle Hill takes drop-offs by appointment, Monday to Saturday, until 4:45 PM. From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, Sydney is an hour ahead of Caloundra, and your drop-off is booked in Sydney time, so the clock you're racing is an hour further on than the one you left with. Most people book the drop-off for the morning after they arrive.

Which day should you book?

Both ends are closed on Sundays. Each location also closes on its own public holidays: a Queensland holiday affects your Caloundra pickup, a New South Wales holiday affects your Sydney drop-off. The booking calendar checks each location separately, so it only offers days that work at both ends.
