Do I Need a Special Licence to Drive a Moving Truck in Victoria?

It's the question we field most: 'Can I drive your truck on my normal licence?' For our fleet, the answer is almost always yes. Under Victorian rules, a standard car (class C) licence covers vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass — and our moving truck, tipper truck, tray truck and even the 12-seater passenger van are all built to sit inside that limit.

That matters because it removes the single biggest barrier to a DIY move. You don't need a light-rigid (LR) or medium-rigid (MR) endorsement, you don't need a logbook, and you don't need to find a mate who happens to drive trucks for a living. If you can legally drive a car in Victoria, you can drive the move.

There are still sensible limits. A loaded box truck handles differently from a hatchback — longer stopping distances, a wider turning circle, and real attention needed on reversing and low clearances. Take the first few hundred metres gently, use a spotter when backing into a driveway, and never exceed the rated load.

A 12-seater is the one to think about for purpose. Driving it for a family trip or a club outing is fine on a car licence; using it to carry paying passengers as a commercial service is a different category that needs the appropriate accreditation. For private group transport, you're covered.
